TidyWallet is a personal finance app for Android. It handles money in several currencies, on credit cards, and in crypto, metals and stocks. You don't connect a bank or create an account, and your records are stored only on your phone.

When a balance can't be converted to your main currency, the app leaves it out of the total and lists it here so you know the total is incomplete.

Features

Eighteen features and how each one works

Accounts and currencies

Keep each account in its own currency.

Add bank, cash, credit card and asset accounts, each in the currency it was opened in. Totals are shown in your main currency along with the exchange rate used. If there's no rate for a currency, the app lists that balance separately and tells you it isn't in the total. Tap an account to see its balance over time, the money that came in and went out, and its transactions. An account you no longer use can be archived or deleted, and before anything is deleted the app says what goes with it.

  • Accounts in any currency. A credit card shows how much you owe and how much credit is left. You can also set a card to track only. Each purchase is then logged by category on the card, and only the payment from your bank counts as spending, so nothing is counted twice. The free plan includes one money account and one asset account.
  • Crypto, metals, stocks & more. Record what you buy and sell. Crypto and metal prices update automatically, and metals can be shown in grams, ounces or other units. Stocks and funds get live prices on your own Twelve Data key: its free plan covers US listings, and its paid plans add exchanges such as London, Frankfurt and Tokyo. Without a key, or for a listing your plan doesn't cover, you type the price. A home, a car or a pension counts too, at the value you set. On both plans, the Portfolio tab lists every holding with its quantity and current value. The purchase cost and gain or loss of each holding are on the paid plan.
Entering transactions

Record a purchase in a few taps.

Amounts are typed on the app's own keypad, which adds up a sum such as 42.50 + 12.90 for you. A receipt can be scanned instead of typed, and a note you've used before fills in the rest.

  • Scan a receipt. Point the camera at a receipt and the total, date and shop are filled in, and the category too if you've filed that shop before. The receipt is read on your phone and the photo isn't kept. English receipts for now.
  • Notes that remember. Pick or type a note you've used before and its category is filled in. For something that always costs the same, such as a subscription, the amount is too. Anything you've already chosen or typed is left alone.
  • Transfers between currencies. Move money between two of your cash accounts, even when they're in different currencies. The free plan has one cash account, so a transfer needs the paid plan's second.
Budgets

See whether your spending is on track for the month.

A marker compares how far through the month you are with how much of the budget you've spent, so you can see early when you're spending too fast.

  • Budgets with pace. Set a limit per category by week, month or year, or for a one-off date range such as a holiday or a move. Unused money can roll over, and a short sentence tells you where you'll finish at your current rate.
  • Analytics. The free plan shows this month's spending, its daily and weekly averages, and how it divides by category; tap a category to see its transactions. A Week, Month, Quarter and Year picker sits under the title. The paid plan adds income and net, a running total compared with last month, twelve months side by side, any period you choose, and a comparison with the previous period. If a month has no records, the app says so.
Forecast

See where each cash account is heading.

A Forecast card on Home carries each cash account forward from your standing orders and the rows you've dated ahead, and names the first day one would go below zero. For a credit card, the warning is the day it would pass its limit.

  • 30, 60 or 90 days. The free plan shows the next 30 days, warning included. The paid plan adds 60 and 90 days.
  • Budgets, if you want them. Switch on what's left in your budgets and the forecast counts it as money you'll still spend.
Charts

Charts built from the transactions you enter.

Home shows your net worth as a line or as a bar for each period. You can drag along it to any day, and cash and assets are shown separately underneath. Each category's spending across the month is drawn in its own colour. Every chart uses only your own records.

  • Charts only when there's data. Each chart is drawn from the records you entered. When a month has no records, its charts are hidden.
  • Categories, two levels deep. A category can have subcategories, such as Transport and then Fuel, with no further levels. You manage them on the Categories tab: collapse a parent to hide its subcategories, merge duplicates into one, and mix each one's colour.
  • Calendar view. The transactions list can switch to a calendar that shows each day's net total. Amounts that don't fit are shortened, for example to 1.2k, and marked as shortened. Tap a day to see its transactions. The calendar and the list are built from the same records, so their totals always match.
  • Home your way. Reorder Home's cards and hide the ones you don't need. Months and years can start on the day you choose, such as the day you're paid, and the app comes in light and dark. Help is built in, with a topic for every screen.
Recurring entries

Enter regular payments once and let the app repeat them.

Rent, salary and standing orders can run as recurring rules. Entries you type often can be saved as templates. Search covers your whole ledger, from the first entry onward.

  • Recurring rules, templates & quick add. A standing order is added on its due date. You choose for each one whether it's posted straight away or waits for you to confirm it. A template fills in the form with one tap. To add an expense without opening the app first, use the home-screen widget, which also shows this month's spending and your budget, long-press the app's icon, or add the Quick Settings tile. With the app lock on, the widget shows no figures.
  • Notifications. You get a notification when a standing order is due and when a budget goes over its limit. Each type has its own switch. Turning a notification off only stops the message, so the rent is still posted.
  • Search across every year. Search covers notes, categories and account names, including the other account in a transfer. If nothing matches, the app tells you it found no results.
Privacy and backup

Lock the app and choose how your records are backed up.

There's no TidyWallet account and no server storing your records. Your ledger stays on your phone, opens with your fingerprint or face, and only leaves the phone as a file you choose to export or back up.

  • App lock. An optional lock that opens with your fingerprint or face. It asks again after you've been away from the app for a minute. Opening the file picker doesn't count as leaving.
  • Import, export, backup & restore. Import transactions from another money app's or your bank's CSV file. Export your records as CSV or PDF. Save a backup file, protected with a passphrase if you want. On the paid plan, back up to your own Google Drive, once or every day. You can restore from a backup file or from Google Drive on either plan, and erase everything from Settings when you want to start again.

How it works

1

Pick a main currency

You choose it once, the first time you open the app. All totals are shown in this currency, and each account can use any currency.

2

Add your accounts

Add bank, cash and credit card accounts from Home, and holdings from the Portfolio tab. Each account has its own currency and can start with an opening balance.

3

Record as you go

Record transactions as they happen. Budgets, categories, analytics and net worth are all calculated from them, so there's nothing to reconcile.

Plans

What the free plan includes and what the paid plan adds

The free plan has no time limit. It lets you record your spending and your holdings with one money account, one asset account and one budget. The paid plan removes those limits and adds the purchase cost and gain or loss of each holding, the full analytics, a forecast that looks 60 and 90 days ahead, and a backup copy in your own Google Drive.

Google Drive backup is the only feature that sends your ledger off your device. It stays off until you turn it on, and the Privacy page lists exactly what it sends.

FAQ

Does it connect to my bank?

No. There's no bank connection or login. You enter transactions yourself, and you can export them as CSV, PDF or a backup file at any time.

What leaves the phone?

By default, only requests for public exchange rates and asset prices. The app uses Frankfurter for exchange rates, CoinGecko for crypto and gold-api.com for metals, and Twelve Data for stocks if you add a key of your own. Before those requests, it also reads a small file from this site that lists any of these services that are paused. None of the requests include your ledger. When you search for an asset to add, the text you type is sent to CoinGecko, or to Twelve Data for a stock. The Privacy page has the details. The only exception is cloud backup, a paid feature that's off until you turn it on. It saves a copy of your ledger to your own Google Drive, and with automatic backup on it does this every day. TidyWallet has no server of its own.

Do I need to register for any API keys?

Only for live stock prices. Exchange rates, crypto prices and metal prices work without an account or key, and if you have a CoinGecko or metals.dev key you can add it in Settings to get your own rate limit. Stock prices come from Twelve Data on a key of your own: its free plan covers US listings, and its paid plans add exchanges elsewhere, such as London, Frankfurt and Tokyo. Without a key, or for a listing your plan doesn't cover, you type a stock's price yourself.

Can I change my main currency later?

Yes. Amounts recorded under the old main currency stay in that currency, and any total that can't include them tells you so.

How do I move to a new phone?

Make a backup on the old phone, move the file to the new phone, and restore it there. You can protect the backup with a passphrase or skip it. Without a passphrase, anyone who opens the file can read it. With one, the backup can't be opened if you lose the passphrase.

Is there a paid plan?

Yes. The free plan includes one money account, one asset account and one budget. You can record all your transactions and holdings and see this month's spending. The paid plan removes those limits and adds the purchase cost and gain or loss of your holdings, the full analytics, a 60- and 90-day forecast, and cloud backup to Google Drive. The paid plan is sold monthly or yearly through Google Play, with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. Neither plan shows ads.
